“Rethinking Innovation Structures Together” – under this guiding principle, the annual meeting of the Clusters4Future, initiated by the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), took place on May 7–8, 2025, at Projektträger Jülich (PtJ). Around 100 participants from Clusters4Future, Forschungscampi and Spitzencluster gathered for intensive exchange. The focus was on good practices, sustainable business models, cross-clustering, and strategic development.

In order to turn scientific findings into concrete solutions, strong networks are needed that actively organise knowledge transfer — such as the Zukunftscluster. This year’s exchange served precisely this purpose: it promoted dialogue across cluster boundaries and strengthened cooperation for a sustainable innovation landscape.

Through keynotes, poster sessions, and workshops, the meeting provided insights into a wide range of topics. Daniela Wirtz, Head of PtJ, emphasized in her welcome address the importance of innovation in times of crisis – and the value of reliable partners when stable structures are to not only emerge but also thrive and endure. Lars Gerlitz from the BMFTR also underlined the need to systematically support forward-looking ideas – in line with the new German government’s current coalition agreement.

Highlights for nanodiag BW

nanodiag BW was well represented by its spokesperson, co-spokesperson, project lead, and cluster manager. The direct exchange with the established leading-edge clusters was particularly enriching, as they provided us with valuable insights into their success strategies and learning curves as ‘trailblazers’ on the path to sustainability.

Our nanodiag poster also attracted considerable interest — a stimulating dialogue developed with valuable new contacts and fresh impetus in both directions. A tour of the research campus, including a visit to the clean room, was also impressive.

Towards the future together in workshops

A further highlight was the opportunity for nanodiag BW to provide its own content-related impetus: Hanna Hasselblatt led a workshop on structural cross-clustering using the so-called sailboat method. Together with the participants, she explored how to define common goals, identify obstacles, and strengthen innovation through targeted cross-cluster collaboration. Other sessions, such as on financing, business models, and forms of cooperation, also offered practical insights and plenty of room for discussion.

Conclusion: A Tailwind for Our Mission

As a Clusters4Future initiative in the field of nanopore technology, the event gave us a valuable opportunity to connect with other clusters, share experiences, and, above all, explore structural synergies. The exchange was not only inspiring but also provided a tailwind for our work. Felix von Stetten, Jan C. Behrends, Sebastian Gutsch, and Hanna Hasselblatt returned with a full backpack of ideas and are convinced, together, we are making a meaningful contribution to knowledge and technology transfer and to strengthening Germany as a hub for innovation.

About the Clusters4Future Initiative

We, the Clusters4Future, supported by the BMFTR, are fourteen innovation networks across Germany. Our mission is to rapidly develop and implement solutions for the major challenges of our time. Our topics range from neuromorphic hardware to personalized cell and gene therapies, quantum technologies, novel approaches to drug development, and hydrogen solutions. Universities, research institutions, companies, and other actors collaborate regionally, pool their strengths, and share their knowledge.
